Kelp to crop
Kaly's business pairs kelp farming with the rhythm of local creel fishing: seaweed in winter, shellfish in summer, so the same boats and crews can work the water year-round. The farm is still young, and most of today's harvest goes out as raw, stabilised biomass to other processors, but biostimulants for agriculture sit on its roadmap alongside cosmetics, animal feed and bioplastics as the farm scales up.

How it started
Founded by Bruce Hare and Taco van Heusden after Hare came across seaweed cultivation research from the Scottish Association for Marine Science during lockdown. The idea took shape in conversation with Iain Matheson, a local lobster fisherman who became a co-founder. Kaly's first farm opened in Loch Bay, near Stein, in 2024, and the business is based in a converted Thomas Telford church and manse on Waternish.
