Norfolk Seaweed is running a WWF and Co-op Foundation backed trial across 96 barley plots and 48 potato plots at Holkham Estate, testing its seaweed biostimulant against synthetic fertiliser, with retailers including Tesco and the John Lewis Partnership watching the results. The farm also restores native oysters alongside its kelp lines, working with Oyster Heaven on a 'Mother Reef' project aiming for four million oysters off Wells-next-the-Sea by 2026: what would be the UK's largest native oyster reef restoration.

How it started
Founded by Willie Athill and Allie Wharf, whose families both farmed oysters and mussels. Athill spent years in the army and then in oil and gas before a spell in Southeast Asian aquaculture drew him back to the Norfolk coast where he grew up. The farm is licensed to grow seaweed across 25 hectares, around two miles offshore from Blakeney Point.
