Great cormorant

Phalacrocorax carbo

Bigger and bulkier than the shag, with a heavier build, a longer neck, and a patch of yellow-orange bare skin around the base of the bill and chin. Bronzy-black overall; breeding adults show a white throat patch and white thigh flash. Dives to chase fish, then perches upright on rocks or posts with wings held open to dry.
