Flatfish

Flounder

Platichthys flesus

How to spot it

A dull brown flatfish of estuaries and tidal rivers, tolerating fresh water — unusual for a flatfish. Rough bony tubercles run along the bases of the dorsal and anal fins and along the lateral line; any orange spots are pale and scattered, unlike the vivid orange of plaice.
